Hints, tips and tricks
01/09-2010
Our E-pages solution has a number of interesting features that we want to share with our customers. Therefore we will provide you with a new tip regarding the use of E-pages each month in 2010.

SEPTEMBER TIP:
Organize your publications in folders and link to the latest uploaded uploaded publication with one single link.

For some customers it can be both relevant and helpful to create different folders to sort the publications on the basis of their content.

On the practical side you can easily navigate through your publications by using folders. Another advantages is that you can deduce a link that will always find the latest uploaded publication from the folder.

In order to create different folders you have to do as follows:

Log on to E-pages Backend system.

Right-click on ”My Catalogs” and choose ”Add folder”. Name the folder and press ”save” to save your changes.  If you want to publications to have a random id, so that people cannot deduce its name, tic the small box ”Randomize catalog ids in this folder”.

If you later want to move the publication from one folder to another you just pull it to the new folder you just crap the link in front of the name of the publication and drag it to where you want it.

Do you want a link that will always find the latest publication in a folder:

Click on the folder that you want to refer to. You can now see the Folder id number above the overview of the content of the folder. The link to this folder will be ”/folder/folderID” instead of the id-number of a single publication

E.g.:
http://www.e-pages.dk/mycompany/folder/597

If you need further instructions you can watch our tutorial videos on How to create a publication, How to edit existing publications or How to link to you publications.

AUGUST TIP:
Limit the access to your publications to specific IP addresses or activate the user name and password function.

Do your publications contain confidential information and do you want to avoid that the wrong people get access to your content or do you simply want to distribute the publications internally in your company?

This can easily be done by e.g. limiting the access to certain IP addresses. Just do as follows:

Start out by logging in to the backend system of E-pages. Find the template that forms the basis for your publications and click on it.
Choose the new tab “settings” and under “IP Secure” you tic the box ”Activate IP secure” and type in the IP addresses that can have access to your publications.

Another possibility is to activate the user name and password function, so that the readers must type in these information in order to have access to your content. Just do as follows:

Under the tab “catalogue” you choose the publication for which you want to limit the access. Click on it and choose the tab “settings” under “Password” you tic the box “activate password” and type in the username and password of your choice.

Both of these functions are part of the basic E-pages solution.

Finally you can also integrate a subsciption system in your E-pages solution. Some of Visiolink's large newspaper customers use this service, where their subscribers together with the printed can have access to the E-pages version of their newspaper as well.

Do you want to know more about integrating a subscription system in your E-pages solution send an email to our Account Manager Andreas Fabricius at afr@visiolink.com with the subject ”subscribtion”.

JULY TIP:

Give your readers the possibility of printing your publications

In E-pages you can allow your readers to print one or several pages from your online publication. This function can be turned on or off by adding an icon to the reader of your publication.

If you allow your readers to print your E-pages publications you will have to change the settings in the template that forms the basis for your publication.

Start out by logging in to the backend system of E-pages and choosing the tab ”Templates”. Then click on the icon ”Edit” next to the template you want to change.

You will now be presented with a number of new tabs, of which you first choose “icons”. Here you can allow the reader to print the entire publication by ticking the box “Download/print PDF”  otherwise you can choose “Print page”.

If you only want them to be able to print single pages you then have to choose the tab ”Settings”. In the section ”Print” you can indicate exactly how many pages the reader may print. The system's default is set to allow two prints but you can decide to raise or reduce this number of pages. If you want them to be able to print all pages you can write “-1” which equals all – but in this case it would be easier to add the icon “Download/print PDF”.

JUNE TIP:
Insert banner ads in your E-pages publications

The tip of the month shows you how you easily can insert bannerads on the sides of your E-pages catalogs. This feature opens up for new revenue streams.

All you have to do is follow these steps:

1. Choose the template you want to change under ”Templates” and ”overview” by clicking on the icon ”edit”

2. Choose the tab ”Ads”

3. Under ”Ads setting” you type in the HTML code of the banner you want to insert in respectively left and right side of your E-pages catalog.

4. Under ”Ads frame size” you can choose the size of the banner

5. Under ”Ads bg color” you can choose which colors you want in the background of the banners

6. Under ”Ads active” you can choose whether or not you want the banners to be active. This function is useful if you want to deactivate the banners for a period of time but want to keep the HTML code for next time.

7. Press ”save” to finish.

Good luck!

MAY TIP:
Get access to great statistics on your publications

E-pages provide their users with great opportunities of getting interesting statistics on e.g. the number of unique visitors, number of page views and other details on your reader's behavior.

Using the tab ”statistic” in the back-end system of Visiolink you'll get access to a number of interesting information on your publications.

First you choose the publication you want to know more about. When you have done this you can choose between the following tabs:

Default
Here you can see the number of unique views.

Pages
Here you can see the number of page views per page.

Clicks
Here you can see the number of times a reader has clicked to zoom. Furthermore the spots where the reader has zoomed is marked by red dots.

Geographic
Here you can see in which countries the publications are being read.

Search
Here you can see which words the readers have searched for in the publication.

Hotspot
Here you can see the number of times a hotspot has been activated in the publication.

PDF
Here you can see the number of times the publication has been downloaded as a PDF document.

Please be aware of the fact that if you upload more than one catalog under the same publications ID, you won't be able to make the statistic work.

Don't forget that you can integrate Google Analytics in E-pages. Read more in this article: http://www.visiolink.com/news/result.htm?nid=15 )

MARCH TIP:
Make your Reader look better
By making very few adjustements in the template the layout of the Reader can be adjustet to look more like the layout of the publishing company. It is possible to insert backgroung pictures, a logo, different colors and an introtekst which bids the readers welcome to the specific publication.

The settings can be made by logging into the back-end of E-pages and pres the tab Templates and edit the template you want to layout.

Insert colors
The colors in the Reader can be set in two different places – in the background, behind the publication and at the top and bottom bar.

The colors at the top and bottom bar can be set at the tab Layout in the fields Top bar and Bottom bar.

The background colors can be adjustet at the tab Page in the field group Page Color. The top and bottom color will grade into each other.
  • background color top: Changes the color at the top of the background.
  • background color: Changes the color at the bottom of the background.
  • background color - outer: Changes the color of the frame.
As an alternative a background image can be inserted.

You can upload you logo at the tab Layout where it is also posible to insert a tooltip and a link.
Please notice that the image can only be up to 34 px high and the background should be transparent to look good.

Edit Your Intro-text.
An intro-text will automaticaly be put in the template. This text is the text on the left side of the publication when you open the Reader. This text can be about the publication, the company or how to use the E-pages.
This text can be edited at the tab Text and will be set on all publications using this template.

We recommend that the text will be edited directly in the text-editor and not to be copied from Word or similar programs, because it will take effect on fonts and sizes

FEBRUARY TIP:
Put Icons in your Reader
The E-pages Reader has some great functionality which gives the users and readers a better reading experience. Among other things it is possible to link to the publication through social media, show page and section overview, show a calendar and search among other publications. It is easy to use these icons – they just need to be added to the template.

The Icons are added to the template on the tab Icons. If you want another order of the icons you can just drag and drop the icons in the overview.

Download/Print PDF
Makes it possible to download and print the entire PDF.

JANUARY TIP:
Allow the readers to open the latest publication
If you want to link to the latest publication from a website or from an e-mail signature, we recommend linking to the folder of publications versus the specific publication. By doing this you ensure that the latest edition is always the version shown when a link is clicked.

An example on linking to a specific publication is:

Read our magazine here: http://www.e-pages.dk/mycompany/45

Instead, if linking to the latest publication is desired, it would be changed to:

http://www.e-pages.dk/mycompany/folder/597
