New Technology Gives New Life to Newspaper Archives
06/01-2010
The largest digitalisation project in Denmark has started and will give Danes acces to nearly two million newspaper pages from two of the countrys largest newspaper archives which goes back to 1884. The technology which has been developed by Visiolink is identical to what is being used on todays online newspapers and makes it possible to zoom, browse and search among all words in the text. It is now much easier to look back in the newspaper archives.

While many European countries are very far on digitalizing newspapers, books and other heritage, Denmarks has been very far behind on securing the heritage for future generations. The Danish newspapers Ekstra Bladet and Politiken has started a large project financed by Politikens Fond to digitalize their newspapers which will be easier to use and be more available for a larger group.

Godbye to Microfilm
The digitalization means godbye to the cumbersom work of searching in microfilm and the new technology secures a much easier acces to the material via the internet. Visiolink which is the first Danish provider on this specific area has developed the software which makes it possible search in the newspapers on the exact same way as in the everyday online newspapers.
-It is the exact same userinterface as we know it from a modern online newspaper. You can browse and zoom in a newspaper from 1884 in the exact same way as the daily newspaper. The search-facilities have been improved significantly compared to older and excisting newspaper achieves. In older solutions it is typical that you can only search on few specific keywords from each article. In this archive you can search among all words in all articles from the old newspapers. Hereby it has been much easier to find what you seek in the material which is now available for the Danes, says CEO at Visiolink, Jens Funder Berg.

Visiolink has previously delivered similar achieve solutions for Tipsbladet and the music magaszine Gaffa who digitalized almost 30 years og archeieves in 2008. The achieves are – like Ekstra Bladet and Politiken – available through Visiolinks E-pages software, which is used by more than 270 newspapers in Europe.
Better Search Options

The technolgy can read content from microfilm and paper and the seach options are both more extended and advanced than ever seen before.

When you search for a word – the word will be highlightet in the text so it is easy to find. To optimize the search quality we have developed a dictionary so the scanner can recognise the old ways to spell in the old newspapers.

This historical material is now availabel in the future and the search options makes it easy to things up as we are used to on search engines. It has been made easy to find knowledge about national and historical anniversaries or find out what the newspapers wrote on the day you were born.
