September 2010:
Upload an alternative pdf for download

Our talented developing team has now create a new feature in our back-end system that enables our customers to upload an alternative PDF for download.

The background for developing this feature is several requests from customers that had files that gave their readers challenges when downloading a PDF version of the E-pages catalog. Other  customers that have flash elements in their publications had the challenge that when their readers downloaded a PDF version of their E-pages catalog they would get a file with white boxes instead of the flash elements.

To help our customers our R&D department started developing a new feature that would eliminate these challenges. The solution is that you now have the possibility of uploading an alternative PDF for download that either is smaller and therefor is faster to download or a file that does not contain white boxes, where the flash elements are inserted but rather alternative images.

A specific case is our customer COWI that had the challenge that some our their readers in Africa because of a limited band width had problems downloading large  files. This challenge has now been eliminated.

In order to upload the alternative PDF, just do as follows:

Logon to the E-pages' back-end system.

Choose the tab “Catalogue”

Choose the catalog you want to change either by clicking on its name or on the icon “Edit”

Now click on the tab “Settings”. At the foot of the menu you will find the section “alternative pdf for download”. In order to upload an alternative file you tic the box “Use alternative” and click on “browse”. Choose the alternative file and click on “open” and finish by hitting “Save”. This file will now be downloaded if your readers click on the icon “Print pdf” in the E-pages reader.

Please note that the icon “Download/Print pdf” must be activated in the template in order to allow the reader to download the entire publication.

May 2010:
Follow the newspaper processing

At Visiolink we constantly work on improving our systems to make them more informative and intuitive for the users.
This time we have made an improvement that will benefit our costumers who have periodic publishing such as daily and weekly newspapers. These users will now have access to further information on the processing of their newspaper through new info boxes in our back-end system.

The new features can be seen under the tab ”Cron” in our back-end system, where we have added a number of boxes that give you valuable information about the proceeding of the newspaper.

The boxes give you the following information:

Folder
Shows in which folder the publication will be placed after having been processed.

Last run
Shows when the last publication has been processed.

Last check
Shows the date and time for the last check of files on the FTP server.

Start by
Shows if the processing will start in a specific time or through an xml file.

Filecheck
Shows when the system will start checking for files on the FTP server.

Page-tolerance
Shows the number of pages that can be missing per section on the FTP server before the newspaper processing can begin. For instance if the tolerance is set to 10 and there are 33 of the 44 pages in the publication on the FTP server the processing will not begin till there is a minimum of 34 pages on the FTP.

Shades in the Reader
The reader currently places an automatic shade in the middle of the pages being read. With our new added functionality our customers now have the opportunity to remove this feature. This can be done in the tab ’Page’ within the template by modifying the field ’Split Shadow’. Selecting ‘True’ enables the shade and ‘False’ will deactivate it.

Improved Video Functionality
The video capabilities within the reader have been further improved in 2 main areas. If more videos are added within the same page, it is now possible to commence playing in sequence. The video will automatically be stopped when another video is engaged. When the user zooms within the page the video will continue to play rather than stopping.

Meta Tags
It is now possible to insert Meta Tags within the templates. These Meta Tags can be used for, amongst others, Google Verification if Google Search is utilized. The field can also be used to insert a Favicon, which is the small icon shown in the adress field within the browser.
The tags are inserted within the field ‘Meta Tags’ under the tab ‘HTML’ found in the template.

Fallback
You can now offer your readers the option to download the publication as a PDF in those cases where no JAVA or PDF reader is installed.
This is activated through the field ’Fallback’ under ’Settings’ within the template.

Flash Across Two Pages in a Publication
Up until now, it has only been possible to insert Adobe Flash elements on one page, but with our latest reader update it is now also possible to insert flash across two pages in a publication.
