The paper must be delivered26/02-2010
It has been snowing a lot in Denmark recently, which has given a big part of the Danish papers problems distributing the newspapers. This year, the island Bornholm has had especially much snow which has meant that Bornholms newspaper Bornholms Tidende had to find an alternative solution to distribute the newspaper on January 30rd 2010.
Per Frost, Chief of IT at Bornholms Tidende tells that it was impossible to get around on the island. “Our ditributive netword which consists of both adults and younger people, using a bicycle had to give up. Everybody worked 24/7 to get rid of the snow, but it was still impossible to deliver the newspaper” says Per Frost. Therefor they decided to make an online newspaper in E-pages which gave the readers the possibility to read the newspaper – just onlne. The Number of Website Visitors Tripled
The Chief Editor of Bornholms Tidende, Dan Qvitzau, came up wuth the idea that they coul make a free online paper so the readers could read the newspaper in E-pages. They have very recently made some reports saying that their readers could be devided into two segments – readers who only read the normal newspaper and readers who mostly uses the online media. Among these two groups there are only 10 percent who uses both types for getting the latest news. Therefor they had a challenge by informing the readers of the normal newspaper, that they could read an online version as a substitube for the regular newspaper. Theoretically onlyn 10 percent would notice the online verison of the newspaper.
Their biggest challenge was to inform the readers, so in order to bring the message they had to contact the local radiostation and ask them to tell about the great possibility it was to read the online version. “After the broadcast the number of visitors on the website tripled” Per Frost says and adds “The publication had more 20.000 pageviews so the message definitely came through.
Bornholms Tidende has published online two times since then in the middle of February. It will be interesting to see if the “Sunshine Island” soon will get more sunshine or the readers can expect more free online newspapers.
